Rick Owens' Fall 2019 Menswear presentation was, for the most part, a decidedly glamorous affair. The California-born designer exhibited a collection of garments with typically unconventional silhouettes and materials, one which drew inspiration from the extravagant stylings of Larry LeGaspi.
The focus of the show was not centred completely on the clothing, however, as Owens debuted a line of sneakers in collaboration with Parisian label Veja. These were designed with a subtle, slightly more stripped back aesthetic, offering a welcome air of measured calmness to the presentation. Since then, the collaboration has become a major talking point amongst fashion critics, contemporaries and consumers alike, due in part to the implied message it sends from Rick Owens himself.
Since its inception in 2003, Veja has become known for its staunchly eco-aware approach to fashion design, producing sneakers made from environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. The latest models from their collaboration with Rick Owens do not deviate from this philosophy, utilising a mixture of organic cotton, sustainable leather and wild rubber imported from the Amazon rainforest.
Of course, Owens himself has cultivated a notable appreciation for sustainable fashion over the course of his career. So while admittedly unexpected, his teaming up with Veja should perhaps be perceived as a logical progression in the development of his creative process. The designer endeavoured to shed further light on his decision to collaborate with Veja in his runway show notes:
“It was the most environmentally friendly sportswear company I could find. I have absolutely no authority to promote sustainability, but I do endorse the idea of thoughtful living and planning for the future with kindness in mind. We all gotta start somewhere.”
The Rick Owens x Veja sneakers represent the core principles of the Veja label while simultaneously exhibiting the guile and craftsmanship that only Owens can bring to the table. Subtle highlights such as the dimpled midsole and leather ‘V’ logo appliques point to its sleek, minimalist design aesthetic. The iconic Rick Owens Barette patches and 'Veja' logo intarsia (found at the heels of the right and left foot respectively) are indicative of two designers working together in perfect harmony.
