The gothic inspired designer, now 52, is one of the few designers that has created a cult following for the way he creates fashion. Following no rules but his own which pulls similarities to other designers such as Raf Simons and Hedi Slimane.

The American started off studying art in Los Angeles but soon dropped out after feeling he didn't have the ‘intellectual stamina’ to become an artist. He instead went on to study pattern-making at a trade college with the thinking that he would always have the trade to fall back on. He went straight into the industry creating patterns for a company who were creating ‘designer knock-offs’. Regardless of this, Owens admits the training of working with designer patterns everyday was invaluable. “I would be given an hour to copy and create an exact replica pattern of a Versace jacket or a Gucci shirt before they would have to take back the garments for a refund”.
Owens started his own brand in 1994 selling exclusively to unique and ultra-hip L.A. boutiques. The designer’s collection was soon on the radar of American Vogue and editor Anna Wintour who ended up sponsoring Owens' first runway show. Wintour has stated that Rick Owens was one of her few “most fabulous recent discoveries”.
