Sarah Burton is a British designer, whose internationally acclaimed career spans her creative directorship of Givenchy in Paris, and of Alexander McǪueen in London, a role she held from 2010 to 2023.
Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire in the north of England, she studied Fashion Design and Print at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, graduating in 1997. Her career began as a student intern at Alexander McǪueen’s studio in 1996. Sarah was named Head of Design for womenswear in 2000, and in May 2010, she was appointed Creative Director of Alexander McǪueen.
In 2011 her design of HRH The Princess of Wales’s wedding dress brought worldwide praise for her mastery of couture elegance and deep understanding of British heritage. In 2012, she received the national honour of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to the British fashion industry.
McǪueen’s womenswear and menswear collections brought her powerfully imaginative story- telling to the Paris runway over 13 years of critical acclaim. At McǪueen’s London headquarters, she founded educational outreach programmes to inspire young people across the UK. After she stepped down from Alexander McǪueen in October 2023, her achievements were honoured with the Special Recognition Award at The Fashion Awards for her exceptional impact on the fashion industry.
Sarah Burton was announced as Creative Director of Givenchy in September 2024, taking charge of women’s and men’s collections at the historic house founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952. Her debut collection was shown in-house in Paris Fashion Week in March 2025, rooting Givenchy’s couture heritage in modern, sculptural silhouettes.
