Maison Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela, the artisanal genius behind MMM launched his first collection in 1989. Born in Belgium he was a student of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts and was considered the 7th member of the legendary avantgarde fashion collective the Antwerp Six, who alongside such luminaries as Rei Kawakubo of Commes Des Garcon, would conspire to revolt against the luxurious world of fashion - as it was then.
To understand Margiela’s collection is to understand a part of the man. He famously shuns any media. He is not ‘fashion’. Simple, creative, elegant details prevail. None so more than his four white stitches that attach the garments numbered label. A concept of deconstruction is always evident. Less is more...
The cut & silhouette of a MMM garment shows the creative thought & understanding of his ideal, reversed seams, elongated sleeve lengths & combination of fabrics, still highlight his revolt. However MMMs’ success is still attributed to the simple & chic nature of each garment. Any boldness MMM show is via the accessories lines, particularly the footwear & jewellery.
